Spirit Island is a cooperative board game about defending your island from colonizing invaders. The game offers each player the opportunity to control different spirits of the land, each with unique elemental powers. Players simultaneously choose which power cards to play each turn, which cost energy. By combining power cards that match a spirit's elemental affinities, players can gain bonus abilities. Fast powers are resolved immediately before the invaders can spread, while other spells require more planning. During the spirit phase, the spirits gain energy and choose how they grow, either by reclaiming used power cards, seeking new power, or spreading their presence to new areas on the island. The invaders expand across the board in a partially predictable pattern. Each turn they explore different parts of the island, building settlements and cities, and causing blight when they attack native inhabitants. The spirits fight back against the invaders and protect the island. The complexity of the game increases over time and offers different difficulty levels, with a variety of opponents to combat.
