The card deck consists of 37 cards, with one card being set aside as "lost" each time. The player who receives the single card, The One Ring, plays as Frodo, while other players choose characters based on their cards. The One Ring acts as the game's trump card, while rings cannot initially be led until someone plays one that is not of the same color. In a two-player setup, a number of cards are dealt to a dummy player with common cards displayed. In a solo game, a player plays four hands with displayed cards. After each trick, new cards are dealt to each hand.
